This week we brought together a group of locally owned Taupo health & safety and HR providers for a practical discussion at the Taupo Cosmopolitan Club on how we collectively support businesses in the region.
The session included Rural Safe, NZ WorkSafe Ltd, Medicache, Health & Safety Tailored for You, Lakes Safety Services, IPG, and The People Effect. Together, this group represents a significant number of Taupo owned businesses, along with wider national reach across both the North and South Islands.
A clear and consistent theme from the discussion was the importance of keeping health & safety and HR aligned — but not combined. While there is some natural overlap at times, particularly around investigations, they are separate disciplines requiring different expertise.
All present agreed that trying to deliver both through a single “one stop shop” model often leads to confusion for businesses. This approach is commonly seen with out-of-town providers and franchise-style models, where services are bundled together and delivered in a consistent way across different regions.
In practice, this can reduce health & safety to a compliance-based approach, rather than maintaining a clear focus on managing real risk. It can also create a disconnect between what is documented and how work is actually carried out on site. Many in the room have had direct experience supporting businesses to recover from these types of models.
What works for one business doesn’t automatically work for another. Locally owned providers understand the Taupo environment, the industries here, and how work is actually done — allowing systems and advice to be shaped around the business, rather than fitted into a standard model.
What stood out was the strength of locally owned providers across the region — each bringing practical, fit-for-purpose expertise.
There was strong agreement that this model — local specialists working alongside each other — delivers better outcomes for local businesses. It also ensures that when more complex HR or health & safety support is required, the right expertise is available.
We’re pleased to now be linking more closely with Steve Punter at The People Effect, giving our clients access to locally owned HR expertise when needed. In the same way, there is growing interest across the group in supporting local solutions for businesses looking to strengthen their systems.
This was a positive step forward for Taupo. A strong, locally owned, connected network — working together, not competing to be everything — provides real value for businesses across the region.
