First Aid in Small Businesses: What You’re Legally Required to Do — and Why You Might Want to Do More
When it comes to workplace first aid, most Taupō businesses just want a simple, common-sense answer to two questions:
👉 What do I need to have?
👉 How do I keep people safe without going overboard?
Here’s what the law says — and what we recommend to actually keep your people safe.
What You’re Legally Required to Provide
Under New Zealand’s Health and Safety at Work Act, every business must ensure that workers have access to adequate first aid facilities, equipment, and trained personnel.
This includes:
- A suitably stocked first aid kit that reflects the risks in your workplace
- Access to trained first aiders (ideally on site during working hours)
- A clear plan and process for responding to medical emergencies
There’s no fixed rule for exactly how many kits or trained people you need. It depends on:
- How many workers you have
- What kind of work is being done
- How far you are from emergency medical help
But there are well-accepted guidelines — and we follow them at Lakes Safety.
General Rule of Thumb: First Aid for Small Teams
For most low-risk businesses:
- 1 first aid kit per 10 workers
- 1 trained first aider for every 10 workers
You’ll need more kits and trained people if you:
- Work in isolated areas
- Use machinery, vehicles, or hazardous materials
- Have regular public visitors or contractors on site
Even if your team is small, you still need someone trained and available to respond in an emergency.
Why It’s Better to Have More Than the Minimum
We always recommend having more than one person trained, even in very small teams.
Why?
- People take holidays and sick days
- Emergencies can happen when your one trained person isn’t available
- It builds confidence and calm in your team
In the real world, first aid needs to be simple and accessible — not just a tick in a box.
